Tryout Age Division Chart
How AAU age groups work
AAU places every athlete into an age division based on their date of birth, using the same July 1 cutoff as USA Volleyball. Each age division runs from July 1 through June 30, meaning two athletes in the same school grade may be placed into different age divisions.
Unlike USA Volleyball, AAU does not use grade-based exceptions. Instead, AAU offers an age waiver option that allows an athlete to play down one division to compete with athletes in their grade level, as long as they are no more than one year older than the age division they are requesting.
To request an age waiver, families must provide a certified birth certificate and proof of grade. These documents must be submitted to the tournament director before the roster deadline.
No age waivers are allowed at the National Championships, Grand Prix or Super Regionals events. Local tournament directors can modify age divisions or grant waivers for local tournaments if their policy allows.
